There is a plan for psych 4. However, it is – like the last two times – up to Peacock to officially give the green light for a new film sequel.
Psych: The Movie premiered in December 2017 on the series’ original cable house, USA Network. Psych 2: Lassie Come Home followed in July 2020 as Peacock Original. likewise, Psych 3: This is Gus, which arrived just this week, debuted on the Peacock streaming service.
So what’s the plan for a possible fourquel, on the heels of psych 3 deliver a baby for newlyweds Gus and Selene?
“Well, we have a lot of ideas” for future movies, psych creator Steve Franks told TVLine. “We definitely know what we want to do in 4, and we know roughly what we want to do in 5, and then we knock, can we do 6?
“Of course they haven’t given any of these the green light,” he noted, “but if they call, we’re ready.”
TVLine asked series leaders Dulé Hill and James Roday Rodriguez about their wishes, hopes and dreams for additional films.
Given the events of psych 3Hill said, “I’d love to see how all of our characters react to being Uncle Shawn, Uncle Lassie, Aunt Jules – to see how they all react to having this new kid in the world. You know this child will be in the middle of it. someone have to watch the baby.”
So, isn’t it time yet? psych to follow The Fast and the Furious‘ lead and go (a little) into space…?
Scanning our tongue-slightly-in-cheek suggestion, Rodriguez, who co-wrote all three psych movies (as well as 16 episodes of the US series), said, “We did a really good job of basing all three movies on character development because I think that’s important once you move from series to movies and spend years in it.” between.
“But now that we’ve done three, we probably deserved a chance to deviate a bit, just like we used to do in the series,” he admitted. “Once or twice a season, we’d take a swing that was a little ‘out there,’ and it would land or it wouldn’t land — but if you were 16 [episodes], it wasn’t that bad. But I do think that if you put all these movies together at the end of the day, no matter how much we do, there should probably be one that’s alone on an island like ours. Halloween III, where you think, ‘That one was weird.’ I feel like we’re getting close to that.”
Whatever psych 4 turns out, Hill has heard at least one solid suggestion for a title.
“In my [social media] comments,” he shared, “someone said the title of the next movie should be A million little shawns, riffs about Rodriguez’s current ABC appearance. “I was like, ‘That’s pretty brilliant.’ This one is called This is Gus, so after that we do A million little shawns.”
