Stan Swamy is a Jesuit priest and tribal activist. He worked for over 5 decades in Jharkhand, fighting for the rights of the Adivasi community. Swamy earlier suffered from hearing loss, Parkinson’s disease, and lumbar spondylosis. He also tested positive for Covid-19 in May 2021. Since then, his condition had deteriorated.
Stan Swamy passed away on July 05, 2021, due to brief illness. He spent his entire life for the rights of one of India’s most disadvantaged communities. He was jailed for seven months, booked for alleged criminal conspiracy and sedition, and under the UAPA by NIA in the Bhima Koregaon case. In January 2021, he received Mukundan C Menon award for human rights.
