Since this is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, this guide will let you know how to do it watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife, if all is well, and much more.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife Release Date
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is one of many Hollywood blockbusters hit by delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but the film finally hits UK cinemas on Thursday Nov 18, 2021.
The film was originally scheduled for July 10, 2020, but was postponed to March 5, 2021 as the spread of the disease forced cinemas around the world to temporarily close their doors.
After another spike in cases at the start of the year, Afterlife was pushed a second time to a November 12 date, for a final delay – thankfully just a week this time.
Is ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Available to Stream?
Since the supernatural comedy has only recently been given an official release date in September 2021, we don’t expect to see the film on streaming services anytime soon. If that’s not enough confirmation, the home page of the Ghostbusters website states that the film will be released in theaters exclusively.
If you were hoping for a Dune situation where the movie was released in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time, it’s not going to happen for Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Many fans hoped the film would be available on Netflix as the streaming giant signed a massive $3 billion deal with Sony earlier this year. However, the contract won’t go into effect until 2022, meaning Ghostbusters: Afterlife doesn’t comply with the scheme.
The film’s release is covered by Sony’s existing deal with Starz, so you can expect Ghostbusters: Afterlife to stream on Starz sometime in 2022.
If you can’t make it to theaters and don’t want to wait that long, you can expect to see the picture on Amazon Prime Video a few weeks after the theater release. It won’t be free though – plan to rent it for $19.99 initially. As time goes by, the rental price usually drops to $5.99 and the option to buy the movie is $19.99.
Where to watch Ghostbusters Afterlife
Sony remains committed to an old-school theater window, and as such, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will only be available to watch in theaters.
“I don’t think we’ll be in the day-and-date release business,” studio CEO Tony Vinciquerra said last December. “I think the economic model for very big budget movies needs the windows that are in the flow right now and will continue to do so. I think every movie that gets released will have an individual negotiation with the exhibitors, but look, we “We think 30 days is probably best. It allows us to advertise our marketing through the two windows, theater and home entertainment. So we think that’s the right way to go.”
A crowd of lucky fans got to watch the film earlier this month when the project had its world premiere at New York Comic Con (SYFY WIRE was in the audience, but you’re not getting spoilers from us!).
“Man, it’s been a while since we started making this movie, and you’re all the most patient fans on the planet. But honestly, my dad and I think you’ve waited long enough,” Jason Reitman said during the conversation leading up to the exclusive screening.

Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife coming to Netflix?

Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife coming to Amazon Prime Video?
While the Ghostbusters movies and TV series are not free on Amazon Prime Video, you can rent or buy them. To give you a general idea, the 1984 original can be rented for $3.99 or purchased for $7.99. This is a good indication that Ghostbusters: Afterlife will eventually get the same treatment.
Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife coming to Disney Plus?
Disney Plus is your go-to if you want to stream a Disney movie, as well as anything from Pixar, the Avengers franchise, the Star Wars Empire, and so on. The Ghostbusters franchise is not owned by Disney, so unfortunately we don’t expect Afterlife to make it to Disney Plus.
Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife Coming to HBO Max?
Due to a Warner Bros. strategy during Covid, Ghostbusters: Afterlife may only be available on HBO Max for only a month before hitting theaters alone. This hasn’t been confirmed yet, and it might as well end if it’s relatively normal by then, but if you’re an HBO Max subscriber you might want to keep an eye out for that.
What is Ghostbusters: Afterlife?
Set in the small town of Summerville, Oklahoma, Ghostbusters: Afterlife tells the story of Carrie Coon’s Callie, a single mother who left Chicago with her two children after learning of the passing of her long-estranged father – a father she even has never known. When they settle into their new home, they soon discover that they are connected to a team of paranormal investigators called the Ghostbusters, and that their father/grandfather may have been one of its key members.
When supernatural phenomena begin to occur, the family and their friends must solve a mystery to their father/grandfather’s move and use equipment made famous by the Ghostbusters to save the city and possibly the world.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman, is a sequel to the events of 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters 2, both of which were directed by Jason’s father Ivan Reitman.
“I’ve always considered myself the first Ghostbusters fan when I visited the set as a 6-year-old,” Jason said in an interview with EW. “I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It’s not a reboot. What happened in the ’80s happened in the ’80s, and this is happening in the present.”
